Yeah know one really knows what the true plan is but I see it like this. Your teaching a good football player a position that is in need of bodies, and its a position that isn't that much different from his previous position. If hes able to adjust to getting blockers off him then theres no reason he wouldn't be able to play the position. We only have two proven linebackers at this point so it makes sense he would get looked at there. This will be something really interesting to look at in the spring game!

i've always been a fan of teaching a defensive player an extra position.  It enables them to grasp even more of the defense and get a sense of where some of the weaknesses of a formation are that aren't as apparent from his original position.

At first I was very puzzled to hear he was moving to LB. The more I think about it, the more I like it. DB has speed, he will hit you and it will hurt you, and he can cover TE's and slot receivers from his OLB position. With the players we have that are coming back from injury, we will be much deeper in the D backfield, and Bates needs to be on the field. LB was where we were the thinnest last year, and needs the most help coming into this year. I really do like everything about this move.

In the front seven quickness kills opposing offenses. Speed and quickness are absolutely fatal. This is simply the start of forming the specific player types needed to run the Tampa 2 and Tampa 2 Hybrid defenses. Auburn will again have two dominant DTs and blazing speed at DE. This move adds the necessary speed and quickness to the linebackers. He and ElToro Freeman and Jonathan Evans have the speed necessary to run these defensive schemes. Auburn has the super aggressive safety necessary to protect the middle already. Yes, he will be playing Linebacker early and often and the Auburn primary defensive set will be the Tampa 2/Hybrid. There will be immediate and persistent pressure on the quarterback. Many power running backs will be caught from behind and tackled for a loss. This is simply another step in the evolution of the Auburn defense. You do not need to fight off Offensive linemen if you catch the play maker from the rear. Just remember Speed Kills! More Speed kills faster. If you have a Tight End or Offensive Lineman leading a play blocking out front and they are fast (4.8 forty is fast for those guys) a 4.4 to 4.5 linebacker can cover the distance and overtake the play maker. This type of play reeks havoc in the backfield, causes offensive mistakes, slows down the development of plays going to the corners, turns the primary point of attack for the offense into the middle of the D-Line. There is where Fairley, Blanc, Whitaker and company come into play.
