Red Shirting Dyer is ridiculous. He will go to the NFL after three red shirt or not.
This is exactly what I was thinking.

OMac got 105 carries during an injury plagued freshman campaign. Consider Bryce Brown got 101 carries backing up Montario Hardesty at UT. Trent Richardson got 145 carries behind Ingram at bama. Based on those #s and the amount of plays CGM wants to run per game, I think Dyer will get close to 100 carries.

guys i know we're excited about fannin because of the potential he has; but i just don't see him making it through the entire season at RB because of injuries and his fumble-itis. dyer will be the feature back by game 3.

I agree, Jason, Dyer reminds me so much of the freshman at Pitt last year. Started off being slightly used, and was so durable he carried 40 times in their last game. A redshirt , I believe would waste a year.

Fannin will be the starter nuff said... and I doubt dyer rs... I see him getting 8-10 carries a game and providing help late in the game with fresh legs.
With Fannin not having to carry the load by himself, it should keep him healthy for some of the big games where we will need his senior leadership.
He knows this offense very well.

Most of these kids are recruited out of high school with the idea of immediate playing time. I believe Dyer came to Auburn with the idea he could compete and win a starting position or at least get significant playing time as a freshman. I say no to redshirting Dyer. We need to go out and get another 4 or 5 star RB to back him up in 2011...IMHO.

Ok I can't listen to this fannin fumbling any more. Last time I checked the best running back in the NFL (Adrian Peterson) has a bad case of fumblitis. If Mario gets the ball 20 times a game and gets 130 yds a game and 3 tds I'll allow a fumble here and there

"i dont see him getting more than 20 carries next year."
You do mean 20 per game, right? As of now, we don't have an every down back. Aycock has a chance to be one but he's unproven. Fannin has had four years to be the guy and hasn't cut it yet. He will be back at slot-back by August. O-mack is good at what he does, which is provide a change of pace.
Dyer and Aycock will have to tote the load.

You can't win the Heisman on the bench (unless you're from Bama )

Three offensive coordinators and two completely different coaching staffs have found Mario Fannin to be Not The Answer. Obviously, he is no Adrian Peterson.

^^^ This is what I see happening. Only time I see a True Freshman as a feature back it's when the team has no depth, that is not the case with AU, we just don't have a proven starter, but I totally agree with this comment above.

Guys who are taking shots at Fannin in this thread (mainly one guy) are in need of a dose of reality First of all, in order to show your excitement level over Dyer and his ability, you do not need to tear down one of our existing warriors. That is absurd.
Second of all, it is a fact that Mario’s move to WR had do with one factor, and one factor alone: The health of his shoulder. I listened first-hand from Coach Gran at a party in Auburn in 2008 as he discussed the nature of Mario’s shoulder injury and how it could very likely be the end of his career as a RB and while they were all very disappointed by it, they were exited that through the move to WR, they would still be able to have “our most elite athlete” on the field in some capacity.
Strangely, I never heard any mention of fumbling…..
But that’s actually not that strange because a poster on another AU forum did the numbers and deduced that Mario has the exact same fumble rate as other AU players who’re not thought of as having any sort of fumbling problems. I can’t recall all the names, but the two I recall off-hand are Brad Lester and Eric Smith. I think the ratio was one fumble every 42 touches. That average was obviously much much higher in 2007 when he had his string of high-profile fumbles early in the season, but since that time he’s now fumbled sparingly enough to bring his ratio down to that of Lester, Smith, and others.
As a Freshman, being out there on the field, he was a converted QB playing RB. It is well-known that converted QBs often experience fumbling issues EARLY in their career because they are so used to carrying the ball out away from their bodies. But since the shoulder injuries kept mounting and mounting and finally he had to be operated on, he was moved to WR as a means to keeping him on the field. Uneducated AU fans have mistakenly formed the opinion he was moved to WR to compensate for being a ‘fumbler’, which is simply untrue.
I’ve really wondered why fans feel that in order to be a Dyer fan, they feel they must be on “Team Dyer’ who is the enemy of ‘Team Fannin’. I’ve seen this with QBs before, but never RBs….. Either way, whether its QBs or RBs or LBs, doesn’t matter. In order to be a fan of one player, you don’t need to be against his teammate. I’m not talking out of my backside, the coaches obviously feel Mario’s the answer for the 2010 team and that means you can think I’m a complete buffoon, but still have to recognize Mario’s the man. The coaches wouldn’t put invest starting RB practice time to a guy who they doubt can hold onto the ball.
Dyer is no doubt a phenom talent and is going to be the next great AU RB. But if Mario is healthy enough in 2010 to take the reins then Dyer will begin his career as Mario’s backup. Simple as that. If Mario’s shoulder can’t hold up, then Dyer may be starting sooner than later. Simple as that.
