Gene Chizik has had his ups and downs in his coaching career. This season, he thinks the foundation has begun to fill out, and if consistency is there, this could be a very good football team. After missing last season due to injury, Aairon Savage thinks the same.
With the upcoming season, where the underlying depth issues from last season won't be near as big of a problem, Coach Chizik says that it all goes back to consistency on both sides of the ball. One of the major factors in addressing the consistency comes back to finding the right players for the system, and with the 2010 recruiting class, they found some pieces that fit nicely into the puzzle. Work. Hard Work. Gene Chizik preaches it,and his staff lives it. On Recruiting: "Make sure no one outworks us. I have a great staff that bought into it," said Chizik. He wasn't hesitant to talk a little about Trovon Reed, how he can do some great things with the ball, but at the same time, we have to see how we develop. Reed was huge part of that top-5 class, and will have a chance to have a significant impact in the SEC. Word out of summer workouts is that Reed continues to impress, and secondary leader Aairon Savage has seen that as well. When asked about what he's liked from summer workouts and the freshman so far, he gave rave reviews. "I like our corners and safeties and our receiver Trovon Reed," Savage said. Aairon Savage has battled injuries throughout his career, and receiving a medical redshirt. It'd be easy for Savage to get caught up in the hoopla of being able to run out of the Auburn tunnel again,. but that's literally the last thing on his mind. His thoughts on hitting the field on September 4th? "Focused on Arkansas State. It'd be mighty selfish to get caught up in the hype. The injury has come and gone, that part's over." Savage's return does a lot for the depth problem we hear so much about. From his perspective, he likes what the defense has. "We should be fine, hit with injury bug (last year), kind of unfortunate; this years a new year, thats our motto, 'this year's a new year,'" said Savage. A lot of players that suffer injuries don't get that chance to get back on the field, but Savage has time and time again responded to the adversity. He knows the chance he was given, and will be sure not to take it for granted. "It's a blessing. A lot of guys don't get that second chance, a lot of other guys don't get that second opportunity, let alone the first, you get another one, that's a blessing." |
